850 West Newport Avenue

Huge 2 bedroom apartments!  Six large rooms (approx. 1400 sq ft)  of meticulously rehabbed space on a quiet, tree-lined block named “The Best Block in Chicago” by Chicago Magazine:

The Apartments:

  • Exposed bricks, track lights, high ceilings
  • Refinished Arts & Crafts woodwork, polished hardwood floors
  • Open-plan eat-in kitchen with new stainless-steel appliances: frost-free refrigerator, gas stove, programmable microhood, and KitchenAid dishwasher
  • New gas-burning log set in original brick fireplace (4 levels of operation from glowing coals to full flames – really throws off heat!)
  • Built-in bookcases flank fireplace from floor to ceiling
  • Maestro dimmer-controlled architectural lighting throughout
  • Fully wired high-speed Internet hub. Remote speaker wiring for quadraphonic or surround-sound.  Satellite or cable access at several locations in each room through quad-shielded coax.  RJ-45 jacks and Cat5e wiring for hard-wired network hub within apartment for more reliability and security.
  • Formal dining room/family room separated from kitchen by Breakfast Bar…a great space for casual entertaining.  Popular with roommates since apartment has two well-separated areas for socializing: living room at front of apartment, and kitchen/dining room at rear.
  • Complete home office adjacent to kitchen with north facing window-walls overlooking landscaped backyard, fully wired for High-Speed Internet, cable and satellite TV, 4 phone lines.
  • Two King-sized bedrooms with  fully-shelved closets and window blinds.  Master bedroom is ensuite with bath
  • Large lockable storage locker in basement with shelves and 10’ hanging bar.
  • Bathroom completely new with new almond cast iron tub for quiet showers, American Standard ceramic disc faucets for no drips, granite “banjo” top vanity, medicine cabinet and two linen cabinets.

The Building:

A fine example of classic Arts & Crafts architecture, carefully restored to original appearance

  • Romantic castellated brick and limestone exterior with large bay windows facing south, front lawn and street trees for dappled sunlight in summer.
  • Landscaped, secluded brick patio with deck furniture and Broilmaster 2-burner gas grille, birch trees,
  • Quiet block of mostly owner-occupied buildings
  • Double party-wall construction for soundproofing
  • Double-insulated windows refinished and rehung to operate effortlessly.  New triple-track storm windows and screens.
  • New mechanical systems: new copper water pipes for good pressure, circuit breakers, new furnace (heat is included at no charge), and new high-capacity hot water heater for long relaxing showers.
  • Large capacity Maytag laundry ($1 wash; 75¢ dry)
  • Secure bicycle storage area with heavy-duty bike rack, which accommodates shackle locks
  • Intercom system to front door and triple-locking ground-accessible windows provide good security
  • Well-lighted workshop and workbench for projects which you may not wish to do inside apartment…e.g:bike repair, furniture refinishing, etc.
  • Parking or automatic garage available directly behind unit; permit parking on street ($25/yr)
  • Free heat and hot water; individually adjustable radiators, guarantee heat in low 70’s.
  • Landlord is graduate engineer and lives nearby

The Neighborhood:

This is Chicago’s “entertainment” neighborhood: many small theaters, restaurants, clubs, and shopping are within walking distance

  • Clark Street and  Halsted Street are a half block away and offer bookstores, theaters, clubs, boutiques
  • Restaurants nearby (too numerous to list, but my favorites within 2 blocks are: Mia Francesca, El Jardin, Matsuya, Mongolian Barbeque, Yoshi’s, Penny’s Noodles, Cozy Cafe Thai and Goose Island Brewpub)
  • Whole Foods Market, Treasure Island and Jewel supermarkets – 2-3 blocks away.
  • Wrigley Field (2 blocks away) Chicago Cubs baseball, sports bars
  • Southport theater district (4 blocks west) Music Box theater (art films & indies, pipe organ), and surrounding bars and restaurants.
  • Live shows at nearby Metro, Vic, Briar Street, Stage Left, Wild Hare theaters.
  • Lakefront (4 blocks): 17 mile bike and jogging paths, Waveland tennis courts and 9-hole par 36 golf course, Belmont boat harbor.
  • Public transportation: Addison el stop (2 blocks – Red Line) and Belmont el stop (3 blocks – Red, Brown and Purple lines) provide 24-hour service – Loop is 12-minute ride.  In addition, lakefront express buses (3 blocks) run down Lakeshore Drive to Michigan Avenue
